I actually didn't buy milorganite for fertilizing but as a deer repellent. Although milorganite is not approved as deer repellent, most of us who get deer visitors know of it's potential to ward off deer. In fact, I think milorganite is doing some studies to prove it's effectiveness as a deer repellant. Basically, the deer is put off by the strong smell of milorganite and I have to say it is pretty strong the first couple of days after applying. I use quite a bit of it in the front yard, around my not deer resistant plants. For the most part, it seems to work quite well and the deer have even left my impatients alone. Once in a while, the adverturous deer will brave the smell and come for a nibble, but that's far and few in between. The smell doesn't really bother me because the area is far enough from my front door and windows. Also, I don't really have to fertilize my flowers since milorganite is really a natural fertilizer and quite a good all purpose one.
