I am a complete novice when it comes to gardening. I heard that Common Ground provided a lot of gardening related knowledge and workshops. True to their reputation, the staff at the store were nothing but helpful when I visited the store. They explained to me how to grow seedlings indoors, introduced me to various garden tools to work with the clay-based soil in the bay area, and found books on growing various types of vegetables. Judging by how patient they were with each customer, they definitely focused very much on education. You can buy various garden products in the store, including a very good selection of seeds, tools, and a variety of organic soil treatment. Also they have a great number of books on organic and bio-intensive gardening. In fact, if you become a member, you can check out two books from their extensive library each week. I highly recommend the store to people no matter whether you are a beginner like me or a experienced gardener. They host many workshops on weekends. John Jeavons, the executive director of Ecology Action, is a frequent lecturer here.

This store is a wonderful resource to the organic gardener. They offer all sorts of lectures throughout the year and even sell hard to find organic soil additives like bat guano and worm castings.
